I get depressed. Seriously, the guy who travels all over the world and sees all types of cultures and lives the laptop lifestyle gets really depressed at times. How? With all these blessings around me? Hard-wired, subconscious programming runs REALLY deep. Also I am human, and not enlightened, so letting go deep, dark feelings can be a bitch sometimes
Personal development is about embracing what is and releasing what is, to create space in the moment. This means accepting all thoughts and feelings which travel down the pike. On sites like Facebook I sometimes scroll down the wall and think….
“I wish I had that, or lived that life.”
This can create depressed feelings. Triggers. Stuff that brings up my buried stuff. There are a few beings in this world who might be depressed for like seconds. These enlightened souls transcend prolonged suffering through spending lifetimes of spiritual training. The rest of us have to deal with shit we bury, because, trust me, it will come up, at some time or another, in your life.
Some causes of depression:
- hanging with a depressed, low energy crowd
- not doing what makes you happy, work-wise
- not working on your mindset
- resisting what is
- looking for outside cures to what you can only heal from within
1: Hanging with the Wrong Crowd
Negative people – I mean really negative dour people – will accelerate your depression. The crowd will focus your attention on what you hate or do not want instead of focusing you on the good. Low energy folks are masters at moving you into a low energy vibe. If you surround yourself with depressed people how can you ever feel good about yourself? Leave them behind. Gravitate toward high energy people. Some of this crowd might kick and scream and bitch and moan when you leave, but you gotta do what is most healthy for you.
Thank goodness I have surrounded myself with high energy friends, many of which I have known since I have been 15 years old.
2: Not Doing What Makes You Happy Professionally
I love writing. I love cash gifting. At times I did not make much money through each channel so I became depressed, but hey, I am making more these days, and continuing to improve my cash flow. I feel blessed. Many people hate their jobs. Life feels like death, a continual grind, a depressing sprint to devote 40 or more hours each week to paying bills, or supporting your family, or devoting your work life to someone else’s definite major purpose.
Quit your job. Now. Or, if you do not have sufficient savings, quit your job. Or, if you do have not sufficient savings and do not want to do whacky stuff and deal with whacky resistance, and you fear doing things the RB way, spend 95% of your free time building an online business, or some venture that you love working, that will help you quit your job.
When I say “95%” of your time, I mean it! We will quickly see if you REALLY hate feeling depressed about your job or if you secretly crave comfort over freedom.
3: No Mindset Training
I see many people who, when I advise them to meditate, explain that their mind just will not slow down. Then they quit. This is the EXACT reason why you need to meditate! You are not your mind. You are not your thoughts or feelings. The statement “YOUR mind” tips you off, right? You own it. You, the pure awareness, attends to your mind, and your depressive states, but you gotta meditate, and visualize, and affirm, to become more aware of these truths.
30 minutes daily, minimum, working on your mindset. Personal development requires personal development, by you!
4: Resisting What Is
Yesterday, I was depressed. Pissed. Angry. Meditating and pushing myself out of my comfort zone reveals to me exactly the stuff I buried, for years. The rage guy, the anger, the grief, the self-consciousness, the embarrassment. All that stuff comes out, arises, and I feel it. In the moment, that is what is. It feels terrible. Depressing. When I fight the feelings, I feel more depressed. When I cry, and cry, and maybe, punch a few chair cushions, or sprint around the apartment, the angry, rage guy, sad, upset, depressed feelings dissipate.
When you feel terrible, sit with it. Do not resist. Let the powerfully sad feelings engulf you. Unless of course, you feel suicidal. Then seek help. Call a 24 hour hotline or speak to a friend. Other than that, cry, cry, cry, and feel it out, to allow the depressed feelings to pass.
Yeah, Ry cries lol!
5: The Outside-In Deal
Looking outside for a permanent cure to depression is not the answer. Pills can control the depression. Buying stuff to make you happy can control it…..but like any situation where you THINK you are in control The Universe comes along to remind you of a great truth: you are not in control. A Higher Power handles the reins, and when you try to heal yourself from the outside-in you are doomed to suffer.
The root cause of depression might be chemical, or it might be some traumatic incident you buried, which forces you to slowly suffer through these lower energies.
See a therapist. Sure, you can take medicine to control the depression but if you want CURE yourself of this disease digging deep is the answer. Talk to a licensed specialist. Learn how to deal with your feelings. Probe around for root causes. As you treat from the outside do the inner clearing through therapy and serious introspection.
I honestly believe you can, with the help of a therapist, make serious strides, and if you are willing to be honest about who you are surrounding yourself with and other life choices you can ease your suffering.
Have you suffered from depression?
How have you battled depression?
